Jim O’Briant, Music Director & Staff Arranger
The Pacific Brass Band, (a California non-profit 501(c)3 corporation) is a “British-Style” Brass Band, was founded in 1990 and gave its first concert in the spring of 1991. Jim O’Briant of Gilroy, CA is the Band’s third Music Director, holding that post since 2014. He also serves as the band’s Staff Arranger.
The members of the Pacific Brass Band come from Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties in California. Membership varies somewhat, but generally stands at about 30-35 musicians.
The instrumentation of the Pacific Brass Band is approximately the same as current contesting English Brass Bands. It consists of Eb Soprano Cornet, Bb Soprano Cornets, Flugelhorn, Eb Tenor Horns (the same instrument known in the USA as an Eb Also Horn), Bb Baritones (small-bore British Baritones, different from an American Baritone), Euphoniums, Tenor and Bass Trombones, Eb Basses, Bb Basses and Percussion. All of the brass instruments except the trombones are of conical bore design, and are members of either the Tuba or Saxhorn families.
After playing a concert at the Jazz Bash every year since 2014, the Pacific Brass Band is pleased to be able to play two concerts this year, both on Saturday in the DeAnza Ballroom.
